I always want combat to match the context. If the characters are trained fighters, it should be more detailed and realistic (for whatever their reality is). If they are civilians then it's more likely to be described in general or subjective terms. It needs to match the tone of the story -- wild, gritty, elegant, hopeless, whatever.

I have written about combat in many different ways. I enjoy reading about it diversely too. But if it clashes, that makes me unhappy.
