Florence Nightingale also opposed the Contagious Diseases Acts, which was an anti-prostitution law that granted police right to arrest women and force them to submit to intrusive medical examination. If the women refused the medical examination, they would be thrown into jails. If the doctors announced that they had VD, they would be detained in hospitals for at least three months or longer, at the discretion of the doctors. Conveniently, the male johns were never submitted to this.
I feel that history often conveniently omitted that famous historical people were social reformers. For example, Helen Keller was the co-founder of American Civil Liberties Union. Martin Luther King Jr. was also a socialist.
