Yesterday I read a romance when the heroine was a jerk to her (very kind and nice) love interest.  Once the love interest fell into freezing water, but the heroine did nothing because she was too busy clutching her purse. She never felt any remorse about her behaviour. I skipped to the end and the heroine never changed, so I gave it up.

I can not longer stand jerkass characters.  Give me characters who like and care about each other, who can communicate like mature adults and trust each other. My life is too short for unnecessary drama.

Oh yes, we need kind and mature characters. It's sadly so rare.

Sometimes when I read books or ffs I wonder why so many like to write a bitchy character and think that it is a good thing. Yeah, a good reason to close the window / stop reading.
Sure, nothing wrong if a character needs to act like that for whatever reason but please make it plausible.

I love it when you have a character that is kind and knows what consequences their actions might have. Oh and when they make mistakes and realize what they did wrong. And not this trope a la "No no, I wasn't wrong. It was everyone else."

Yes, I would rather have the drama be about situations and circumstances, rather than personality issues that would otherwise result in one of the characters being friendlies and bitter about it.
