Home Assistant is pretty neat, and a lot of its components configure themselves or have sensible defaults and ways to do things. They're working diligently on making the workflows for the creation of automations and scripts and such not require a lot of typing or thinking about code and mostly succeeding, but all the same, for some of the more complex things, Home Assistant might require the occasional dip into a code interface or to do something more technical that choosing from a list of possible options.

I like it because it's possible to build a useful home brain without having to communicate with a data snooping server if you want to. Local control is awesome for letting things still work even when the Internet is Internot.
