snowynightDue South is a 1994-98 comedy cop show about Canadian Constable Benton Fraser who came to Chicago on the trail of the killers of his father, and "for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture" have remained, attached as liaison with the Canadian Consulate. He works alongside a detective of the Chicago Police Department to solve crimes and are aided at times by Fraser's deaf white wolf, Diefenbaker. The show was cancelled twice. When it was revived in 1998, the actor for the original detective "Ray" Vecchio (Ray V) had other jobs, so a new actor came in as Fraser's new partner "Ray" Kowalski (Ray K).
Episode Summary: "Fraser returns to Chicago after a vacation in Canada, only to find someone masquerading as Ray Vecchio - Stanley "Ray" Kowalski. As he tries to get to the truth of where Vecchio is, the pair find themselves on the trail of an arsonist, connected to another currently detained at a mental institution, and who seems to be hounding them."
Quick Thought of the episode:
- The opening action scene of Fraser pursuing his target is intense. It's great for setting him up as an oddball that's out of place even in Canada.
- It's really sad when Fraser stands in the ruin of his burned apartment with Dief. Essentially exiled to Chicago, he's practically homeless, his best friend missing. Moreover, he has to deal with an impersonator that everyone insists is his best friend.
- The rationale for Ray K's presence is unnecessarily complicated, but it gives a lot of dramatic potential.
- Fraser is really sneaky about the office records. I approve.
- I find it reasonable for Ray K not to rush into a burning house, especially when the firemen come fast. However, it's great to show contrast between the two Ray. "Ray Vecchio would." Fraser is really subtle here.
- Fraser licks things for clues. He must have a superhuman immune system.
- Ray K's violence threat against the arsonist doesn't age well.
- Fraser compliments Thatcher's eyes. She looks surprised too.
- Driving a burning car into "The lake they call Michigan" is a crazy plan that I'm surprised Ray K will go through with it, despite repeating that "I do not risk my neck for anybody". I have a feeling that this will set up their future dynamic.
- It's hilarious that Fraser talks his father's ghost and Ray K at the same time.
- Fraser knows that Ray V is safe and thinks about him. He invites Ray K to eat with him. Things are looking up despite his burnt apartment.
