"Steam Chinese yam. Cut into slices. Dip with raw honey. It's like sliced jade with flower fragrance" - From Benxin zhai shushi pu (Vegetable Recipes from Benxin's Studio) complied by Chen Dasou

Benxin zhai shushi pu is a book of vegetarian recipes complied in North Song Dynasty, China (960-1127). The title of the recipe: "yuyan" is a pun because it sounds the same as "royal feast" in Chinese. The joke is that for this dish, Chinese yam is a very common ingredient and the cooking method is very simple.

The book is more poetic musing about the value of ordinary food than actual cooking instructions, like similar Chinese books around the historical period. Recipes with detailed instruction became more common in Yuan Dynasty (1279-1388).
