Wang's people reading skills is excellent because she is very observant about people's microexpression and body languages. She is smart enough to realize that Lu is a charming and ruthless liar when it suits his purpose. However, she also realizes that Lu respects and cares for her.
There is a scene that Fu kidnaps her and tells her that he is actually her true foster brother. Wang can read that he's sincere, so she tests him by asking if he knows what food and colour she likes.
He fails entirely because he never looks more than the surface and feels entitled to Wang.
In the novel, Wang grows from someone who expects neglect and hiding her true opinion to be willing to stand for herself. With a more supportive family, Wang would be able to learn to be more confident and care for herself, but it's never too late.
The writer said in the afterword that she wanted every woman to be able to be themselves without fear. I hope that everyone has the chance too.
