Colloquial French: The Complete Course for Beginners by Valérie Demouy, Alan Moys

Recently I have picked up Duolingo to learn French again. I'm an absolute beginner, so I picked up this book to complement my learning.

Despite the title, I think it's for people at least with some French vocabulary knowledge. It teaches French through reading and listening to conversation. There are also grammar notes.

Unit I covers topic about a tourist's first contact in France, which is useful if one day I go to France. I haven't gone far yet, but hopefully I can keep going.

I am ESL, so my native language and English. My French is still at a beginner level so I don't think it counts yet.

I'm in a similar boat. Swedish is my native language, been learning English since I was about 6 years old, and then I used to be okay-ish at German (started learning in junior high all the way up to uni) but then let it whither because I had so much else to do 😅 I also know very beginner level Italian, Japanese and Standard Arabic, but have given up on every being fluent in those.

It's always nice to see others learning a language and I do have a soft spot for French myself :) A friend of mine is also trying to learn French using Duolingo but I think trying to complement the lessons with a book, as you're doing, is for the best -- I know having a book on Dutch helped me cement some basic things that Dutch Duo lessons didn't explain, so just being able to fall back on it for further clarification is very useful, even if it seems much more advanced than the level we're currently at.
