There were four of us—George, and William Samuel Harris, and myself, and Montmorency. We were sitting in my room, smoking, and talking about how bad we were — bad from a medical point of view I mean, of course

Hmm -- first line of the book I'm reading now is:
Two girls were walking down Palmerston Road, Portsmouth, with a graceful swing which drew the eyes of the passers-by to them.

I'm only a couple chapters in, but so far it's looking a little more central-character-focused than the previous books, which were more ensemble. The central (and title) character isn't one I most care about, but of those on stage she has, um, the most potential for growth -- of the sort that's the bread-and-butter of more standard boarding school stories.

It was indeed enjoyable, and the way the author handles concerns slightly sideways of typical boarding school stories (there's a more adult perspective, with time spent on the head and other teachers, not to mention a concern for politics that will probably give upcoming mid-century events an interesting effect) makes this a far from predictable series.
